Starbucks banned employees from sporting anything in support of the Black Lives Matter motion, BuzzFeed News reported Wednesday.
According to the report, an inner memo despatched to Starbucks employees final week warned staffers in opposition to sporting garments bearing messages in support of the motion.
“Such messages are prohibited below the corporate’s coverage in opposition to equipment that “advocated a political, non secular or private difficulty,” the memo learn.
An organization spokesperson confirmed the memo’s authenticity to BuzzFeed.
“Such messages are prohibited “to create a secure and welcoming” atmosphere at Starbucks areas,” he stated.
Starbucks confronted criticism amongst employees as some of them stated that the espresso retailer permits and even encourages employees to wear pins in support of LGBTQ equality.
The improvement comes as protests have erupted across the U.S. over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in late May.
Floyd, a black man, died May 25 after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck whereas Floyd was handcuffed and saying that he couldn’t breathe. His loss of life sparked protests in Minneapolis and across the nation, some of which grew to become violent.
