NASA introduced Monday it has confirmed the presence of water on the sunlit facet of the Moon, marking a historic discovery with implications for US plans to ship a manned crew to Mars.
The discovery was made with SOFIA, NASA’s airborne observatory run together with the German Aerospace Center.
Paul Hertz, NASA’s Astrophysics Division Director, mentioned the invention has undone prior assumptions that water on the sunlit floor wouldn’t survive the lunar day.
“This discovery reveals that water may be distributed throughout the lunar floor, and never restricted to the chilly shadowed locations close to the lunar poles the place we’ve got beforehand found water ice,” he instructed reporters on a convention name. “This discovery raises new questions on how water is created, and the way it can persist within the harsh, air-less situations of the sunlit lunar floor.”
