Debra Wilson, one of many authentic solid members on “MADtv,” stated that she left the sketch comedy collection in 2003 after listening to a couple of pay disparity between her and the white male actors that joined the solid after her. In an interview with Comedy Hype News, Wilson revealed the showrunners had been unwilling to bump her pay or deal with the problem after bringing it to their consideration.
“I used to be a tenured solid member from the start, from pilot, and other people had been coming in after me making greater than me,” Wilson stated. “And after I realized there have been white male solid members who had been coming in after me making greater than me I went, ‘Okay, can we discuss this?’ And the reply primarily was no.”

While Wilson didn’t reveal the precise pay hole between her and the opposite solid members’ salaries, she stated her departure was much less about “{dollars} and cents” and extra in regards to the precept of being the one authentic Black girl on the present since its tv debut in 1993.
“What I wished to do and what I wished to create on that present didn’t hit a glass ceiling,” Wilson stated. “But after I was informed that ‘All the stuff you need to create and be on the present has a financial worth, and we don’t worth it as a lot as the brand new folks coming in,’ that’s after I left.”
Wilson was most acknowledged for her impersonations of Oprah Winfrey and Whitney Houston. Wilson stated that she would have stayed on “MADtv” if the showrunners had been prepared to negotiate about elevating her wage.
“Had they simply stated, ‘You know what, Debra, we’re going to increase your wage. It gained’t match his however we’re going to increase it,’ I might have stayed,” Wilson stated.
Wilson was one of many eight authentic “MADtv” solid members together with Bryan Callen, David Herman, Orlando Jones, Phil LaMarr, Artie Lange, Mary Scheer and Nicole Sullivan. Some of the solid members added afterward included Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Alex Borstein, Will Sasso, Frank Caliendo and Michael McDonald. When the sketch collection was briefly revived on the CW in 2016, Wilson returned for an look.
