Macy Gray is not backing down from her controversial stance that the American flag needs to be redesigned.
The 53-year-old Grammy-winning singer elicited blended reactions over a Juneteenth op-ed she wrote for MarketWatch that shortly went viral. In the piece, Gray in contrast the U.S. flag to the Confederate flag, calling it “tattered, dated, divisive and incorrect.” She doubled down on her assertion on Monday.
“Why can we have to have a good time a flag that now represents divisiveness and hate?” she declared on FOX 11.
Gray felt the want for change greater than ever on Jan. 6, when she watched rioters storm the U.S. Capitol, a lot of whom carried American flags.
“The individuals there held it up as their image as ‘that is what America represents,'” Gray continued. “‘We’re threatening to grasp the vp and our gang signal is the flag.'”
Gray mentioned she “shouldn’t have to salute” the present flag.
“I shouldn’t have to honor it, I shouldn’t have to pledge to it,” she defined. “All I’m saying is let’s redesign the flag for the remainder of us who aren’t part of that tribe.”
The musician labored with an artist to create a brand new flag, one that’s extra inclusive of all Americans. It has 52 stars to embrace Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and it options stars which can be a variety of colours, from darkish to gentle, as on the melanin scale. As for the stripes, Gray wrote in her essay why they need to be “off-white.”
“The Smithsonian paperwork that the ‘white’ stripes symbolize purity and innocence. America is nice. It is gorgeous. Pure, it ain’t. It is damaged and in items,” she said.
“The blue sq. represents vigilance and perseverance; and the purple stripes stand for valor,” she added. “America is all of these issues. So, what if these components on the flag remained?”
The newest change in the American flag was greater than 60 years in the past, when the new states Alaska and Hawaii got stars.
“Sixty-two years later, in 2021, we have modified and it’s time for a reset, a change. One that represents all states and all of us,” Gray concluded.
